Commercial Garbage & Recycling

BIA Resources Garbage* The City allows properties within the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area (BIA) to opt in or out of City garbage collection.

Garbage Bins

Member Facebook Posts (7)Garbage bins are becoming popular targets to use as carry-alls. We recommend businesses mark/label their bins with permanent marker or stickers so if they go missing they can be identified.

If your bin goes missing, please report it by emailing member@downtownkingston,ca as well as reporting it to the police on the non-emergency reporting site.

City garbage collection

  • Apply: Apply for City collection using this form. Property owners must fill out this application as all fees are applied to tax bills.

  • Garbage Pick-up Calendar:  Use the City of Kingston Waste Collection Calendar tool to determine your assigned pick-up date based on your location.
  • Fee: A fee of $286.20 per business at the requested property will be charged on the final property tax bill of the property.

  • Limits: The fee provides a garbage disposal limit of six bags per business listed under Part B. Any number of bags over this limit will require City of Kingston bag tags. See more information on City bag tags and how to set out your garbage.

Recycling

The City does not collect business recycling at the curb. All Kingston businesses may bring their recyclable materials to the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) at 196 Lappan's Lane.

Register to drop off business recycling at KARC

  • First time users of KARC: Proceed to the scale house, located directly across from the scales, to set up an account with the scale-house staff. You will be asked for basic company information and about what materials will be dropped off.
  • Registered businesses: Proceed to the scales to be weighed by staff. Follow staff direction to unload your materials. Please return to the scales once you have dropped off your materials.

All businesses are required to sign their scale tickets after weighing out. Tickets are available for signing in the scale house after scaling out.

Recycling fees/rebates

Depending on the resale market for recyclable materials, fees or rebates may apply for businesses dropping off recyclable materials at KARC.

Request a monthly price list by contacting Jason Hollett, jhollett@cityofkingston.ca.

Rebate cheques or invoices will only be sent out to companies that owe/will receive a rebate of more than $10 in a calendar month.
