Street Cleanliness: A Shared Responsibility

What’s with Garbage?

With downtown Kingston's growth and popularity, managing downtown garbage, especially during the busy tourism season, has become challenging. While we are actively addressing these issues with our partners, you can make a difference in the cleanliness of our beautiful community.

Businesses have limited garbage collection, making it crucial to dispose of waste responsibly. We urge you to follow the guidelines outlined below to assist in keeping Downtown Kingston clean.

Sidewalk pressure washing is conducted regularly but is limited due to limited resources and the downtown area's size. If your business regularly has spills ie. ice cream, grease, or alcohol, please wash your sidewalk down with biodegradable soap and water, or invest in a pressure washer and make it a part of your daily tasks.

Together, we can make a difference in keeping our downtown core clean and inviting.

What is illegal dumping?

Illegal dumping can have significant negative impacts on the environment, wildlife, and the overall aesthetics of the city. It is essential for residents and businesses to responsibly dispose of their waste by utilizing approved waste collection services, recycling facilities, or designated waste disposal sites.

Examples of illegal dumping:

  • Disposing of residential or commercial garbage in or beside public garbage receptacles

  • Disposing of residential or commercial garbage any day other than your designated date.

  • Disposing of residential or commercial garbage in any place other than your designated location.

  • Exceeding your bag limit for residential or commercial garbage without a bag tag.

  • Disposing of construction materials or furniture on the sidewalk.

  • If you witness instances of illegal dumping in downtown Kingston, you can report it to bylaw enforcement by emailing bylawenforcement@cityofkingston.ca.
